How many times a day do you hear God’s name spoke in Vain? The most common usage is the famous text “OMG”. Do you realize that they are meaning your God, our LORD, our Father, and our Creator each time that phrase is being used. I have heard it used as lax as using the word “COOL” or “That is AWESOME”. How about when someone is upset and they use “G–“? I remember being in a Christian school where there was a teacher, Mr. R., who would not stand ANYONE using God the way many use it as a norm. He would give students demerits if they used God’s name in vain. How serious is this?
Could any of you tell me the Ten Commandments? Take some time and read Exodus 20. Check out specifically verse 7, for the commandment right there explains it all. Now many will say that the Ten C’s are of the old law and God renewed it through Jesus Christ. Lets check out what the Two Greatest Commandments are:
37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And ha second is like it: iYou shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 jOn these two commandments depend kall the Law and the Prophets.” -Matt 22:37-40 (ESV)
Now lets discuss what it means to love the LORD your God. If went around and used your name as an insult or to curse it would you be happy with me? Then if I turned around and started talking about you in how great you were would you think of me as a friend? You see when we use God’s name in vain we are basically being a hypocrite. We use his name in worship one day, and then the next day we use it as a weapon or curse. This is so such a serious offense. The jews do not even write His name out completely, and we use it as if it is proper to say whenever.
Consider this, we hear His name used all the time whether it is on a show or your friend. It saddens me when I hear it come from a fellow Christian, but I want you all to know that I am not condemning you . I am warning you that it is a sin, and it may take you time to recognize how often you use it. Then I need you to understand it is a sin, and you should repent. This should be a blog that encourages you NOT to sin by using God’s name wrong. I love Grace, for we do not deserve it.
