8 See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits[a] of the world, and not according to Christ. 9 For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10 and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority. ~Colossians 2:8-10 (ESV)
These verses have been apart of my life’s thinking since 2009. I have several verses that God has used in my life to impact me, and all of them have led me back to knowing Him better. These verses specifically have opened my eyes to our current culture. we live in a Postmodern world where opinions are the facts, and the facts are old fashion. Having a moral standard is laughable, and we need to catch up to the “real world”. It is interesting that Paul has these verses which he wrote back when the Roman Empire existed, and yet an old truth fits right where we are in our current time frame. In America we have become very tolerant of many different religions, opinions, and “truths”. How easy is it for us to be deceived?
If we call ourselves Christians, are we not followers of Christ, and what does that mean? Do we spend time knowing God’s word so we can discern what is a deceit or what is truth? I would encourage all of you to read or listen (Radio drama by Focus on the Family) to The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis. It was written in 1942, but after you read it let me know if it does not sound like today. The Evil one has no equal to God, God has already won the fight, but Satan does not want to go down alone. He wants to hurt our Creator by taking as many of His creation down through their sin nature. He cannot do it directly because it will be to easy for man to see the evil, but if he can subtly use our sin nature against us then he can pull us from our God. In our current culture, creating opinion as someones foundation is a solid format. How about using fear as a reason to not do things right. How about following your heart? Keeping yourself so busy you do not have time to study. How about liking certain philosophies even if they are secular, but we spend a lot of time trying to make it work with Christianity because it is more modern.
Our sin nature still exists even after salvation. The only difference is we have the Holy Spirit, but we can hinder the Spirit if we do not stand by discernment. Our time in His Word, fellowship with other believers, training disciples in a true fundamental foundation, and stop being lazy about how we impact the community. Churches need to be a place where people run to to find Jesus. We has Christians need to be see as Light and Salt not as prideful, arrogant Bible Thumpers. I hear a lot of these terms in the Gaming Community. So many see us no better than Hitler. The issue is as being a Christian becomes harder we rather compromise than stand by a foundation of truth. We have even fallen into the lie of tradition as a form of Fundamentalism. Fundamentalism is about defending the truth in Scripture not defending human tradition. This does not mean we change the gospel or how it is translated, nor is it about fitting the truth to our current culture because it should not offend. The Gospel will defend because our nature goes against the truth. we need to realize as Christians that we deceive ourselves if we try to fit the world instead of going against the World in love, truth, and zeal. Will you know God so you can discern the lies in your life?
