What does this mean? I thought Christians only believe in One God. You are right! The reason for this blog is to open your eyes to the many gods we create in life. There are a couple verses that bring light to this form of thinking. The first of the Ten Commandments does talk about having no other gods before ME.
4 (E)“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 (F)You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am (G)a jealous God, (H)visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing steadfast love to thousands[b] of those who love me and keep my commandments. -Exodus 20 (ESV) www.biblegateway.com
There is also the verse that mentions there are two masters God or Money. This is also another consideration of all the things in our life. God or (insert something you love most) which of rules your life? Which one do you spend money, time, or effort for? You see each day we are in a spiritual warfare. Paul even explains how he must deal with his desires of the flesh versus the spirit. Christians can fall into this category of fighting the flesh daily, we are not immune. As a Christian, we do have the full armor of God, and we do have the Holy Spirit in us who can help us make godly decisions.
There are so many idols that can control our lives. It does not have to be a statue or a god from another religion. We can put sports, actors/actresses, or even hobbies. If you love to play games, fish, or even cook does it control your life. What is the first thing you do when you get up in the morning (besides brushing your teeth or taking a shower)? Our desires are built on our hearts desires. Following our hearts is the main philosophy taught to our society, but it is deceitful. (Jeremiah 17:9) We are born into sin because of the sin of Adam in the Garden of Eden. Now we battle over what we serve and follow. We glorify achievements based on humanism and politically correct accomplishments. We live in a world where opinion is fact, and absolute truth are myths. When did sin become okay?
We need to choice who we want to serve God or the lies of this world. We must be willing to step up and recognize when we are allowing sin to enter our life. These gods do not have to be gods. We can still have fun, enjoy our hobbies, and live godly. We cannot allow these gods to hold our hearts. We must turn from our sin and idols, and then we need to hold tight to God and His word. Take on the Armor of God and stand aside with God!
